The delicate balance of mentoring someone is not creating them in your own image, but giving them the opportunity to create themselves” - Steven Spielberg

Regardless of where you are in your career—a recent graduate, a new manager, or a seasoned professional—everyone can use a mentor to help guide them.

Investing in mentorship is integral for the growth and development of our culture, as well as helping Automata grow in a resilient way.

Mentoring - The Basics

Mentorship is essentially a voluntary and collaborative partnership

Someone with rich and valuable experience shares their learnings with someone who has identified some core areas of development they want to actively work on.

The following areas are examples and this is not an exhaustive list:

What you focus on in your mentor sessions depends on the purpose of the partnership, the mentee’s unique needs and ambitions, and the mentor’s experience and skills.

Conversations vs Actions

Mentoring Conversation

Mentorship relies on mentees and mentors engaging in recurring, focused and productive conversations that occur in person or via Zoom.

One hour per month is the standard commitment, but this may differ based on each person's needs.

Mentee Actions

The real value of mentorship comes through thoughtful action – such as when mentees make progress on a goal or apply what they have learned in a real-world situation.

Mentors will often suggest activities that mentees can do in between their conversations.

Refer to Mentee Activities for ideas.
