The expectation for moving into the EM track in Engineering is that you will have a solid foundation as a competent IC engineer.

An IC engineer should minimally be ready for promotion to Level 4 before moving to Engineering Management, although an IC can make the change over to EM’ing at any point in their career.

It is possible for an EM to line manage an IC at a higher level than the EM and should not be seen as a conflict of seniority.
